Sardines are the emblematic fish of Concarneau, and fishing probably dates back to the 15th century. This activity has accompanied the economic development
of the town right up to the present day. At the beginning of the 20th century, 500 boats were involved in sardine fishing.
In 1900, Concarneau was home to 32 of France?s 160 canneries. Today, more than 3,700 tons of fish still pass through the Concarneau auction every year, and three canneries continue the tradition.
