À propos
Born in London to an English mother and a Belgian father, Philip CATHERINE is a living legend of European jazz, one of the most unique and respected guitarists of his generation. Born in London and raised in Brussels, by the 1970s he had established himself as an essential voice of jazz guitar, developing an instantly recognisable style: lyrical, ethereal, warm and deeply human, always at the service of emotion. He has played with Lou BENETT, Chet BAKER, Dexter GORDON, Larry CORYELL, Stéphane GRAPELLI, Charles MINGUS and Toots THIELEMANS, Didier LOCKWOOD, Jean-Luc PONTY, Philippe ESCOUDÉ and Niels-Henning ØRSTED PEDERSEN. Philip has crossed the decades with a rare elegance, combining artistic rigour with great freedom, and has had an undeniable influence on contemporary European jazz.
His music, subtle and accessible, blends swing and sonic poetry, reaching far beyond the circle of jazz fans alone. Philip has recorded over 20 albums under his own name. He has received many major awards: the BIRD prize at the North Sea Jazz Festival (alongside Stan GETZ), the Django d'Or as best European jazz artist, and the ZAMU Awards (Lifetime Achievement and Best Musician). The Antwerp Conservatory awarded him the title of Maestro Honoris Causa, a title previously bestowed on figures such as Toots THIELEMANS. In 2016, he was named Best International Guitarist at the ECHO Jazz Awards in Hamburg.
Alongside him, Bart De NOLF, a pillar of European double bass, brings depth and breath. Introduced to jazz by John Clayton and winner of several first prizes, he joined the BRT Jazz Orkest, accompanying great international soloists. A renowned teacher, he teaches at the Brussels Royal Conservatory and heads its jazz department. He has worked with many jazz and pop stars, including Philip CATHERINE, Toots THIELEMANS (for 17 years), Mal WALDRON, Shirley BASSEY and VAJA CON DIOS. He has also played with the singer ADAMO since 2004. A member of the Brussels Jazz Orchestra since 2018, he has taken part in numerous recordings.
The trio is completed by Nicola ANDRIOLI, an Italian pianist who navigates between jazz and classical music, with a notable specialisation in the repertoire of Maurice Ravel. Trained at leading conservatories in Italy, Paris and Brussels, he has studied with major figures in international jazz.
As a composer and arranger, his musical language blends improvisation, composition and multiple influences. Very active on the European scene, he has shared the stage with Philip CATHERINE, Toots THIELEMANS, Archie SHEP, Joshua REDMAN and Richard GALLIANO. He has recorded over 35 albums, including 7 under his own name, and has a number of personal projects under his belt. Based in Brussels since 2009, he is now a leading figure in contemporary European jazz.
On 11 July, the PIANO TRIO CATHERINE will be coming from Brussels to share their lively, generous and deeply human music - an evening to be experienced to the full, open to all, where emotion and the pleasure of listening take pride of place. A moment suspended in time, carried by an exceptional sense of musical dialogue.
