Le voyage d’hiver

The winter journey is one that awaits us all. Inspired by his own experience as a carer, Benoit Giros directs and stars in a deeply moving play dedicated to supporting those suffering from incurable illnesses. A journey towards death, a journey towards life.
On stage, Benoit Giros plays Jacques, a man on his final journey whose memory is fading, surrounded by his loved ones – his wife, his daughter and his son. Borrowing its title and its structure in 24 scenes from the splendid piece for piano and voice composed by Schubert a year before his death, *Winter Journey* is performed in harmony with the music. As memories flood back, the questions and relationships between the characters shift, until reality bursts in with the force of a personal account. Crafted from close observation of life, drawing on interviews and personal encounters, this journey—brought to life by Denis Lachaud’s pen—traverses the spectrum of existence, by turns tragic, absurd, comic and poetic. And it reminds us that whilst death takes our loved ones from us, it also transforms those left behind.
