One exhibition, one day each month, thirty minutes, one animal family leading to the works!
Animals are at the heart of the museum's concerns this year, so it's only natural that they should lead curious visitors to the works that represent them. Moving from one animal to another, the animal families will provide an opportunity for artistic and eclectic discoveries... This month, the PAPILLIONS and CHIROPTERES are our tour guides, so follow them!
They're joining us this month because of their strong symbolic value, so why not judge for yourself? First of all, the butterfly, because it was associated very early on with the goddess Psyche. It has to be said that the Greek word 'psuché' can be translated as both 'breath' (hence 'soul' as opposed to 'body') and 'butterfly'! A symbol of the fragility of life, of the passage from life to death, the immense diversity of its shapes and colours meant that in the Middle Ages it was sometimes identified with the Virgin, sometimes with the Devil. As for the bat, not entirely diurnal, not entirely nocturnal, the only winged mammal, very common but discreet on every continent, it too has a strong ambivalence. A diabolical creature par excellence in the West, it is conversely a symbol of prosperity in China.
The hieratic flight of both will take us from the teeming ceramics of Auguste Chauvigné in Touraine to those of the Manufacture de Creil-Montereau, from the naturalist plates of Jean-Louis Boncoeur to a mysterious Moscow magazine, via a little-known fable by La Fontaine.
The Musée de la Loire invites you to enjoy a cultural and artistic lunch break. If you've got nothing else to do, and you're not afraid of going goat... then why not join us?
