In 1870, the Germans invaded France. The Army of the East, known as the Bourbaki Army, was sent to liberate the besieged city of Belfort. Defeated, it retreated to Lyon via Pontarlier. Surrounded by the Germans, it finally asked to be interned in neutral Switzerland.
