In 'Solissimo', CharlElie Couture conjures up images of both tightrope walkers and skippers, offering us an intimate reflection on the perilous exercise of performing alone on stage; a return to his roots in which he interprets his sunny songs on guitar and piano with genuine acoustic elegance.
Being alone on stage is a perilous exercise, with no safety net. In the same way that a tightrope walker challenges the absolute by accepting the movements of the air and the gusts of wind, so too is performing alone a challenge...
When you're creating, you have to enjoy facing the void without reference points or guarantees. To set off on a journey into the unconscious. But isn't that the very essence of what we do? Doesn't being an artist mean accepting chance?
I was fifteen or sixteen when I started performing "on stage alone" in small venues. I told stories and sometimes went into long digressions. It was during a solo concert at the Café de la Gare that my life changed...
The solo is a game of chase, which gives free rein to a certain form of improvisation... And the proximity with the audience creates an intimacy that allows the audience to penetrate the songs in their almost original version...
What drives me when I go solo is the pleasure of skippering a boat, a frigate, as it sails with the currents, beyond the waves of fashion. Solo concerts often leave lasting memories...
