Conférence "Quand les molécules deviennent des parfums"

The sense of smell is one of our most subtle senses, but also one of the most fascinating.
How can a single chemical molecule be transformed, within our brain, into a perception as rich as the scent of roses, citrus or the forest floor?
This talk takes you on a journey into the heart of the world of smells, at the crossroads of chemistry, biology and neuroscience.
After exploring the nature of odour molecules, we will discover how they interact with olfactory receptors to create an almost infinite range of sensations.
We will also see how these signals are interpreted by the brain, giving rise to emotions, memories and even individual preferences.
Through concrete examples and a few olfactory surprises, this presentation invites you to understand how scents are constructed… and why each of us has a unique sense of smell.

Fabrice NEIERS is a Professor at the University of Burgundy. After completing a PhD in enzymology at the University of Lorraine, Fabrice NEIERS spent several years in Sweden working on the development of vaccines against a bacterium responsible for pneumonia.
