It was erected in 1857 to commemorate Napoleon Bonaparte's two visits to Auxonne in 1788-1789 and 1791.
The bronze statue, created by François Jouffroy, depicts Bonaparte in his second lieutenant's uniform. His right foot, slightly forward, shows his desire to move forward and take action. Phal-Blando, the town's architect, designed the pedestal. The four bas-reliefs, also sculpted by Jouffroy, represent four key moments in Bonaparte's life.
